Actually, what I was wondering about Leopolda (and I have followed her character through other works by Erdrich) is if she is actually an archetype--or if she coincides with a certain spirit(s) from Native American religions--a spirit that deals with the death of humans and animals, decay, seeing souls through to the next world. The problem is that Leopolda, like civilization itself, has become too prevalent. The world is out of balance--and that's why she is so destructive.
