I don't think the physical harm was something she thought would "help" per se. Then again maybe she had convinced herself it would. The whole idea of her doing that to Marie seems like a cat-mouse type scenario.
I don't think she was insane, but i also do not think she was fully there. Honestly, physical pain does not really conquer anything. I think Leopolda thought that by using physical pain it would hurt and make a change. I think she felt it would cause fear.
Leopolda I do not think was insane. She just used physical pain, something stronger than the pain inside her to ease her mind. The pain though that she suffered is real and left life-long marks.
Physical pain and denial have strong traditions in Christianity. Christian philosophy sometimes divides body from soul and consequently (rightly or wrongly) some have denied the desires of the body in order to achieve good for the soul. Obviously, this taken to the extreme or done for the wrong reasons is not a good thing!
