"Saint Marie" from Love Medicine

Why came over Marie the possessed her to push Sister Leopolda into the furnance, and after doing so why did she have mixed feelings?

This scene always reminds me of Hansel and Gretel, shoving the witch into the oven. I think it's supposed to resonate with the fairy tale. Marie is protecting herself in a more, sophisticated, psychological way than Hansel and Gretel. She is protecting herself from white culture which has betrayed and abandoned her (just like H & G parents).

I agree completely.
She trusted Leopolda, who was a nun and thus a "do-gooder" and Godly person, proclaiming the teachings of Christianity.
And when Leopolda accused her [marie] of having the Devil within her, this completely erupted any sense of being able to relate w/ Leopolda for the same goal: catching and forcing the devil to flee.

I think that Marie pushes Leopolda into the furnace because she is scared and doesn't know any other way to protect herself. She can sense that the situation she is in is very wrong, but she has mixed feelings after pushing Leopolda in the furnace because although she is hurt by Leopolda's actions, she constantly seeks adoration and attention from others, which she can gain from Leopolda. I believe that Marie's reasons for wanting attention from others is rooted in (as martitr stated) the fact that she had been abandoned by those around her.

I think she pushes Leopolda into the furnace because in the situation she doesn't really know what else to do. Once Leopolda accuses her of having the devil with her, Marie no longer cares to get her approval.

Both characters are "tuned into" the devil (unlike the French and other nuns who are fairly trusting and clueless regarding evil). Marie wants revenge for the closet incident of her childhood and goes to the convent seeking it. Leopolda seems to have mixed feelings about Marie -- hates the evil in her (probably because she sees it as a reflection of the evil in her) but makes some kind gestures.
