I think that Marie wants Leopolda's love and admiration because all the other sisters respect Leopolda and she feels that if Leopolda thought highly of her and spoke highly of her to others then she would be respected.
I've even found myself wanting the admiration and approval of someone I don't particularly like. You always push yourself to meet their standards to make yourself that much better in the eyes of other people. Also, by earning admiration of Leopolda, Marie feels that she has achieved the highest reward.

She wants to prove to Leopolda she is good enough, people want to exceed all expectations especially if they are not fond of those people.

Don't forget what follows that line: "Sometimes. And sometimes I wanted her heart to roast on a black stick." Pretty dark humor!
Marie is just discovering who she is--and her strength of character. As soon as she embraces who she is, she won't want to please Leopolda any longer.
