"Saint Marie" from Love Medicine

On page 82, what does Marie mean when she says "evil was a common thing I trusted"?

When Marie says this, in my opinion, it means that it could be a sanctuary, per se. Maybe what she says is evil is a reaction to what others say is evil, and thus leading to the conclusion that she is only saying that it is evil because it is what others say it to be.
In turn, this could mean that it was something she trusted deeply, but was evil all along without her knowing. Perhaps she is referring to Leopolda in this? She seems to be "looking" for Satan, seeing also if Leopolda sees him as well. She trusts Leopolda in this regard...Until the following episode when Leopolda accuses her of having the Devil within her.

Evil is a thing that all humans fall into, in the form of sins. It is common for us to take the easy way out and maybe not make the best decisions.

I think that when Marie said that "evil was a common thing I trusted" she meant that evil itself can be trusted. It is dark, yes, but also predictable and easy. It's always there. Possibly one of the most dependable things in Marie's world.

I think Marie said this because evil comes so easily to most people. A lot of people trust "evil" because it is predictable and gives us power that is a security. Because most people feel more comfortable when they have power.

Marie could have stated this for many different reasons. However, i feel that she said this because in everyones life the wrong thing is what is done. People choose the wrong thing because it is a risk and who knows maybe they feel they won't get caught, or maybe it will change their life in some way. Good is a hard thing to do when evil is amongst it as well.
