Stigmata
Why did Sister Leopolda tell the other sisters that Marie had a stigmata?

Sister Leopolda told the other sisters that Marie had stigmata to cover up the fact that she had physically harmed her by stabbing her in the hand and knocking her unconscious. Stigmata, or wounds on the body corresponding to those of Christ, was a faith-related excuse that accounted for the wounds in Marie's hand.
Stig- Oh, right. Haha...Almost forgot! But yes. It's basically a cover-up for Leopolda so she doesn't have to "face up" to how Marie REALLY got the mark/wound.
i think that sister leopolda lied for self preservation, because she probably would have been punished or kicked out of the convent if the other nuns knew the truth, and so that she can say that the girl she had been helping to become a nun was good enough to have a stigmata.
I think that Sister Leopolda told the other sisters that Marie had a stigmata for she felt bad that she stabbed her with the fork. Sister Leopolda probably knew that if she told the truth she would be kicked out of the coventry, and Marie wanted was to be looked upon as a saint. Didn't she get her way?
I think Sister Leopolda fabricated the whole "stigmata" issue because she did not want the other sisters knowing she had physically harmed Marie. I don't know much about nuns, but I am pretty sure they are not supposed to stab other people or knock them unconscious. By calling it a stigmata, she saved herself and her reputation.

I think Leopolda would be hated forever if she owned up to the fact that she stabbed Marie. Why would Marie play along anyway?
